About Charity Navigator

Charity Navigator is an independent organization that evaluates "the financial health" of over 5400 charities. They provide statistical information on what each charity spends on direct services, administrative costs and fundraising and each organization is rated with between zero and four stars. Charity Navigator provides you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about the charity you have chosen. Using Charity Navigator as a guide we have selected deserving 3 and 4-star charities from which to choose.

Our Charities:

	ASPCA - Founded in 1866. "The ASPCA's mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. The ASPCA provides local and national leadership in animal-assisted therapy, animal behavior, animal poison control, anti-cruelty, humane education, legislative services, and shelter outreach."
	NEADS - Established in 1976. "National Education for Assistance Dog Services, also known as Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans, was established in 1976 to train and provide independence to people who are deaf or physically disabled through the use of canine assistance."
	First Book - Since 1992. "First Book is an award -winning non-profit providing new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors in affecting literacy - access to books. First book brings transformative free and low cost books into the lives of children who need them most, opening doors to bright futures for children and families at risk..."
	Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières - "Founded in 1990. Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian organization that provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters."
	Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International - "The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) is the leader in research leading to a cure for type 1 diabetes in the world. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research."
	Leukemia and Lymphoma Society - Founded 1949. "The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. The Society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families."
	American Parkinson Disease Association - Founded in 1961. "The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) was founded in 1961 to ease the burden and find a cure for Parkinson's disease through research, patient and family support and education."
	CARE - Founded in 1945. "CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. Our mission is to serve individuals and families in the poorest communities in the world. Drawing strength from our global diversity, resources and experience, we promote innovative solutions and are advocates for global responsibility."
	Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust - "The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Service Trust is dedicated to one, single purpose: building better lives for our nation's disabled veterans and their families. To carry out this responsibility, the Charitable Service Trust supports a broad spectrum of physical and psychological rehabilitation programs..."
	Big Brothers Big Sisters of America - Founded in 1904. "Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children, ages 6-18, in communities across the country. Our mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth."
	Heifer Project International - Founded in 1944. "Heifer Project International is a humanitarian assistance organization that works to end world hunger and protect the earth. Through livestock, training and passing on the gift, Heifer has helped 8.5 million families in more than 125 countries improve their quality of life and move toward greater self-reliance. Heifer helps build strong communities because each project participant agrees to pass on the gift of animal offspring, training, or skills to another family in need."
	Sea Shepherd Conservation Society - Established in 1977. "Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international marine wildlife conservation organization whose mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species."
	Rails-To-Trails Conservancy - Established 1986. "The mission of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors to build healthier places for healthier people."
	Action Against Hunger - USA "Part of the ACF International Network, an agency established specifically to combat global hunger. The mission of Action Against Hunger is to save lives by eliminating hunger through the prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition, especially during and after emergency situations of conflict, war and natural disaster."
	Women's Funding Network - Founded in 1985. "The Women's Funding Network is 135 organizations that fund women's solutions across the globe. We give women the money and tools to transform their ideas into lasting change -- in every critical area from combating poverty to achieving advances in healthcare, education and human rights."
	Archaeological Conservancy - Established in 1980. "The Archaeological Conservancy... is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to acquiring and preserving the best of our nation's remaining archaeological sites."
	ACCION USA - Founded in 1991. "A leader in U.S. microfinance, ACCION USA empowers low-to-moderate income business owners through access to capital and financial education. With economic opportunity, these entrepreneurs—often minorities and women—can build assets, better provide for their families, create employment and strengthen their communities."
